The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc is a meeting of three virtuoso fiddlers from different Nordic regions, each steeped in centuries of traditional music. Olav Luksengård Mjelva, Anders Hall and Kevin Henderson hail from Norway, Sweden and Shetland, respectively, and unite to explore each other's traditions, blending their three distinct flavours into a sound that is ultimately unique, whilst meaningful, intense and invigorating.
The project is the brainchild of Anders Hall, who felt that the combinaton of three distinctive fiddling styles would create something special. At the trio's first meeting in Voss, Norway, in 2009, this hunch was proven to be correct, and an instant musical connection, as well as excitement and respect for each other’s heritages, sealed the future of the band.
As renowned exponents of their region’s rich fiddling traditions, each of the band’s three members are in great demand, playing in a number of outfits. Anders Hall and Olav Luksengård Mjelva visited the Orkney Folk Festival in 2014 to great acclaim, with the cross-Scandinavian outfit, SVER, whilst Kevin Henderson can often be seen in the frontlines of Fiddlers’ Bid, Boys of the Lough and Session A9.
